The Walking Dead is a great show, but let's face it..the characters don't make the best decisions.
Instead of being on the run constantly, there's some pretty simple solutions that would ensure long term survival and worrying about constant zombie attacks. Of course, if you took some of these solutions, there wouldn't be too much drama on the show.

Dig Holes and Trenches
Zombies are exceptionally crappy climbers...especially on the Walking Dead. Instead of running around like idiot..pick a spot and dig some really deep holes.
I don't think zombies have the engineering skills to traverse a hole in the ground.
Find a Castle
Ok..this one might only apply to a European version of the Walking Dead but castles are the ultimate in zombie proofing. Fully intellegent humans had problems getting into these things without massive armies and siege weapons so i think it would do the job against zombies.
I guess if you're in the US you could make to Orlando
Find Other Humans That Don't Want to Kill You
Ok..there might be some bad guys but not everyone can be a jerk right?
Find some other humans that are like minded. Clear out an area of zombies with any weapons you can find..rinse and repeat..apocalypse solved.
Find More Military Equipment and Learn How to Use It!
So the premise of the show it that the army got completely overrun right? That means they didn't get a chance to fire off all of those wonderful toys.
Pick up a map, find a military base, and start kicking ass. There has to be training manuals there too right?
Go to the Coast!!!!
Decrease your chances of being attacked by zombies from behind by 100%.
Apparently our heroes are stuck in the middle of central Georgia..but if they just started walking east i guarantee they would hit the Atlantic.
Wear Swat Team Armor..not Bare Midriffs
There's lots of things that can go wrong during in a zombie apocalypse including zombie bites! You should probably find some of that police armor at the prison instead of dressing like a poor man's Lara Croft
Find an Island!!!
Ok..there might be some zombies when you get to the island. but once you kill them you're done! If one of your crew dies on you only have one zombie to deal with. hope you like fish for dinner!
It should also be noted there's a ton of island right off the coast of Georgia. It's probably the first place I would've gone.
You also greatly reduce your chance of being attacked by other humans.
Head for the Mountains
Zombies can't climb for crap..head to the mountains!
Sure, you might have to run down the hill for food and such from time to time but it beats getting eaten.
Don't Rely On Chain Link Fences
Ok..one zombie is a weakling. But one thing zombies are good at is being stupid and moving together is a straight line. Their combined weight is more than enough to bring down a chain link fence.
Instead, use your valuable monologuing time to dig holes and build better defenses.
Use Electricity
Electricity is probably the most useful thing ever developed by humans. It's uses are nearly infinite and modern life would be impossible without it.
They have these things called books that would still be lying around. If i had nothing to do but survive, I think I would teach myself how to become and electrician not to mention all of the generators that are lying around somewhere.
